Barley Water

Drinking barley water is a way to increase your milk supply when you're breastfeeding. It's so easy to make!!! During my baby's first months I made this recipe a couple of times when I didn't have alcohol-free beer around (also recommended by my midwife).

Note: It's not gluten-free!

Vegan Indian Masala Chai

Much better then coffee, TRUE. I'm having that everyday in autumn now. For the raw sugar, I used coconut sugar, my favorite, of course.

You can make your own masala blend here, so your morning bliss is ready in a few minutes.

Three Minute Chocolate Avocado Smoothie

This is one of my top favorite breakfast recipes for crazy days. Whenever I have to leave early I mix the ingredients and it's ready with no fuss.

I would recommend using frozen chopped bananas instead of just cold ones.

Bulletproof Coffee

Well, what can I say about it… I say it’s not for everyone and I say I don’t take this everyday because I almost don't drink coffee, and when I do it's barely half a mug.

Tibetan monks have been adding yak butter to their teas for a long time, and so this seems to be a 'revisited" recipe that's now kinda trendy. I really enjoy it when I'm in the mood for coffee.

If you google you’ll find the pros and cons of this, so before trying and buying the (expensive) ingredients, please consult your physician.

I love it and sometimes crave for this.

Easy and Healthy Horchata

Horchata is a frothy Mexican drink with cinnamon, vanilla and rice. I made my own version and I am sure you’re gonna love it!

Ingredients:

- 2 cups cold coconut milk
- 2 tsp cinnamon powder
- 1/3 cup coconut sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- pinch of nutmeg
- 5 ice cubes to blend
- more ice cubes, to taste

Blend all ingredients (with 1 ice cube). Pour over a glass with more ice cubes, if desired. You can also put everything into a mason jar, close and shake it like a cocktail.

Pink Panther Bomb

I've always skipped breakfast. It has always been like that. To change this, I started trying smoothies first thing in the morning. Since I hate to eat fruits alone, seems to be working!

2 very ripe frozen bananas (in chunks)
10 soaked dates
1 TBS soaked Gojis
1 handful baby spinach leaves
½ cup frozen raspberries
1 cup homemade almond milk (or more for desired consistency)
1 ts maca powder
1 ts açaí powder

Healthy Malt Coffee Frappe

My friend Erika tagged me into this recipe and I got crazy about it! I made my own decaf version with malt coffee and also turned it into a vegan drink because coconut milk is what I drink at home anyway. No need to add any sweetener.

Ingredients:

2 small or 1 big - very ripe banana, chopped & frozen
¾ cup of Malt coffee (cold)
¼ home made coconut milk (cold)
1 tsp Vanilla extract
Raw cocoa powder to sprinkle

Perfect way to stay cool in the hot, hot summer!

Golden Milk

Don’t make that face just because it’s yellow and it looks like dirty water. You cannot believe how wonderful it tastes!

A nutritious beverage made with turmeric, coconut milk and cinnamon. SO-GOOD!

Lactose-free Coconut Mocha

What about something special for your mornings? I haven’t had a Mocha for AGES due to my (mostly) L-free lifestyle!

Tips:
‒ Use FULL-FAT coconut milk for a super creamy mocha (low fat coconut milk is crap, it tastes like dirty water).
‒ Next time I’ll make half of the recipe. 350 ml of coffee was way too much. I saved the rest for a couple of hours later and reheated in the microwave ‒ shame on me, I know!
‒ I always use maple syrup/coconut sugar in recipes that need heating. I’ve heard honey should always be taken raw (if you’re interested in the topic: http://www.mockingbirdmeadows.com/2013/11/19/reasons-you-should-never-cook-with-honey/).

Homemade Nut Milk

It’s been quite some time since I started making my own milk. I love a good fresh nut milk.

It's super easy. Just two basic ingredients: nuts and water. You can use almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts… anything you have at hand.

Ingredients:

3 cups hot water (not boiling)
1 cup almonds (no need to peel)

What you’ll need:

1 blender
1 nut milk bag (or a peace of some lightweight fabric, like voile)
1 bowl

Directions:

1 – Soak the almonds in water for at least 8 hours. Change the water at least twice.
2 – Heat 3 cups of filtered/fresh water.
4 – Pour the 3 cups and the soaked almonds in a blender.
5 – Blend them for ca. 3 minutes. Remember to stop from time to time so that you don’t overheat the blender!
6 – Place a nut milk bag over a bowl and pour the milk. Squeeze the bag to get all the liquid.
7 – Add the sweetener of your choice (skip this if you're baking or doing something else with the milk); maybe some vanilla extract or cinnamon -- and ENJOY!

VARIATIONS:

- Instead of nuts, use shredded coconut and make a delicious homemade coconut milk! (But then skip soaking process)
- Busy or lazy? Use 1 cup of raw organic almond butter + 1 cup warm water and blend J

The remaining pulp has its uses, so don’t throw it out. Here are a few ideas for what to do with it:

• Add it to pancake, muffin, or cake batter
• Add it to cake frosting
• Add it to pudding
• Add it to oatmeal
• Add it to a smoothie
• Spread it on toast with a drizzle of honey
• Dry it out in the oven and use it as breadcrumbs for breading things like chicken.

TIP:

I personally only use nut milks in raw recipes, they somehow curdle when heated. For recipes that demand boiling or baking, I prefer coconut milk.
